INLAYS AND ONLAYS

If you have a dental filling that needs to be replaced, you may need an inlay or onlay procedure to restore the tooth.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a SMILE, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

WHAT ARE INLAYS & ONLAYS?

Inlay – An inlay is similar to the traditional dental filling and fits inside the tops edges of the tooth, called the cusp.
Onlay – An onlay is a bit more extensive and is a replacement for the cusp of the tooth, covering the area that the cusp would normally lay. In fact, dental crowns are a type of onlay that covers the entirety of the tooth.
The two types of inlays and onlays are known as ‘direct,’ and ‘indirect.’

Direct – During a direct procedure, Dr. Nora Balota removes the old or damaged filling and any tooth decay that may have accumulated. The tooth will then be shaped and new resin material will be placed onto the tooth. The material will be molded to the correct shape and then cemented onto the tooth. The direct method will take place during one visit to our office.
Indirect – The old filling and decay will be removed the same way during the indirect procedure. However, instead of receiving a new filling the same day, an impression will be made of the tooth and the surrounding teeth. This method will be sent to a laboratory, which will create your new inlay or onlay. You’ll receive a temporary filling until your mold has been made. At this point, you’ll come in for a second appointment to receive the permanent inlay or onlay.
Once you have your inlay or onlay placed, you will need to care for it by practicing good at-home dental hygiene. This should include brushing twice a day, brushing daily, and visiting Balota Family Dentistry every 6 months for a dental cleaning and exam.
