Tips On How to Prevent Gum Disease

Attractive woman drinking waterIf you’ve been diagnosed with gum disease, gingivitis, or periodontitis, you can rest assured that you are not alone. The CDC has estimated that around half of the American population will suffer from gum disease and many will end up losing teeth as a result. These odds are even higher for males over the age of 65.

Preventing Gum Disease

Preventing gum disease is actually quite simple. Below are a few ways to make sure you keep gum disease at bay:

  • Good At-Home Oral Hygiene – Brushing and flossing regularly will rid your teeth of the bacteria and plaque that can cause gum disease. Make sure you’re brushing your teeth and gums at least twice a day for two minutes at a time, with fluoride toothpaste. But the best way to keep gum tissue healthy and intact is to make sure you floss your teeth at least once a day.
  • Visit the Dentist – Visiting Balota Family Dentistry at least every six months for a dental cleaning and a checkup will help to prevent gum disease. Additionally, if you are showing signs of gum disease, Dr. Balota will be able to detect it in the early stages when it’s easier to treat and before it has time to cause too much damage.
  • Quit Tobacco – Lastly, smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco have both been shown to dramatically increase the risk of gum disease. We recommend quitting the use of tobacco products not only for your dental health, but for your overall health as well. Tobacco has also been linked to oral, throat, and lung cancer.

If you believe that you may be suffering from gum disease or if you simply need to schedule an appointment for your regular dental cleaning and exam, please contact Balota Family Dentistry.
