The Most Common Causes of Your Toothache

Woman with a toothacheToothaches are notorious for coming on suddenly and severely and being very difficult to relieve. But you’re not alone, because almost everyone will experience a toothache at some point in their life. Here at Balota Family Dentistry, patient education is important to us. We want you to know the common causes for toothaches and how to relieve the pain of a toothache or prevent them from happening in the first place.

Common Causes of Toothaches

Below are a few of the most common reasons for tooth pain:

  • Dental Cavity – The most common cause of tooth pain is a dental cavity. You may not feel any pain during the early stages of a cavity, but as it deepens and reaches the nerves of the tooth, pain and sensitivity will follow. Making sure to keep regular dental checkups can allow us to catch and treat a dental cavity before you feel any pain.
  • Bruxism – Bruxism is the term used to describe the nighttime clenching and grinding of the teeth. This is caused by stress or as a result of certain sleep disorders. As the teeth clench and grind against each other, the tooth enamel will begin to wear down, exposing the nerves of the teeth. This will cause sensitivity and pain. Bruxism can also lead to the chipping and cracking of teeth. Here at Balota Family Dentistry, we can fit you with a custom night guard to minimize the damage caused by bruxism.
  • Cracked Tooth – A cracked tooth isn’t always obvious as the crack can sometimes occur on the inside. Symptoms may sometimes not appear until days after the damage was already done. If you suspect that you have a cracked tooth, it’s important to make an appointment before the crack deepens and becomes worse.

A toothache is never a good sign. The earlier you have your tooth pain evaluated by a dentist, the better the outcome will be. Allowing the pain to continue will only make the problem more severe and difficult to treat. If you’re suffering from tooth pain, please contact Balota Family Dentistry today. Our friendly dentist is located here in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
